A few ideas i have for a simple set of RPG rules.

The characters are barbarians in a dark age setting.

Roll for Strength / Intellect / Agility / Willpower / Charisma / Magic.... 1d6+1 for each.

Roll for combat skills Sword / Battleaxe / Spear / Throwing axe / Dagger / Bow / Shield / Dodge....roll 2d6 each

Calculate ;

Perception Roll = Intellect x 2 + Experience.
Craft Roll = Intellect + Agility + Experience.
Knowledge Roll = Intellect + Willpower + Experience.
Toughness Roll = Strength + Willpower + Experience.
Persuasion = Intellect + Charisma + Experience.
Agility Roll = Agility x 2 + Experience.
Sorcery Roll = Magic + Experience.

Combat

Each character or monster activates when its card is turned.
The deck has a card for each player and monster.

Attacking = roll less than or equal to skill to hit. Roll 1d20
Defender = roll less than or equal to Shield or Dodge skill to save. Roll 1d20

(note ; this gives a combat system comparable with Runequest)

Damage ; Roll location die and 1d8 ( Battle axe is +1 / dagger is -1 )

7+ = heavy damage ...disabling wound
2 to 6 = solid hit.....wounded.
1 = just a nick.

Target now makes a Toughness roll, (only PCs and special NPCs and some Monsters get this roll !)
Location has = Leather armour +2 / metal armour +6
A pass results in the character reducing the wound by one level.
Failure results in the full damage.

Disabling wound to Head, Chest or Abdomen, target is disabled. (lesser mortals will be slain)
Disabling wound to leg or foot , fall over, can only crawl. All combat skills at -6.
Disabling wound to arm or hand, cannot use limb, willpower check to stay in the fight or retreat. All combat skills at -6.

Wound to Head, Chest or Abdomen, pass toughness roll to stay in the fight. All combat skills at -6.
Wound to Limb, target makes Toughness check to still use limb. All combat skills at -3.

Experience = Take a note of each skill successful during the adventure. Roll higher than current skill on 1d20 to increase skill by 1.(as Runequest)

Magic : 2 = Dragon / 3 = Bear / 4 =Wolf / 5 = Raven / 6 = Eagle / 7 = Snake.

Dragon ; Runemagic.
Bear ; Combat.
Wolf ; Tracking / Loyalty / Endurance
Raven ; Illusion / Trickster
Eagle ; Visions / True sight.
Snake ; Healing.

Possible start points.
Characters are all slaves on board a ship, which is wrecked on an island.
OR
Characters are members of a remote barbarian village.
OR
Characters are meeting each other for the first time when they are recruited into a Mercenary Company OR Viking Raiders.

Hi

I know your wanting to do your own thing but this site might be of use and save inventing the wheel again with the added bonus of it all having been play tested over a number of years.

Thanks for the link...... but they are not close enough to RuneQuest to be of use to me.

And still to add the Vampire the Masquerade personality traits. happy

Roll on this table twice, and select which is Nature and Demeanor. (if you roll the same one twice then choose a different one)

1) Architect; create something of lasting value, leave a legacy.

2) Gallant; all round heroic type.

3) Mediator; keep the peace within the group.

4) Survivor; survive, even at the expense of others.

5) Autocrat; seeks power and control over others.

6) Sycophant; toadys to the powerful.

7) Rebel; has a problem with authority.

8) Conformist; goes along with the majority.

9) Jester; comedian.

10) Avant-Garde; interested in the latest trends and fashions, stylish.

11) Conniver; untrustworthy sneak.

12) Thrill-Seeker; self-explanatory

13) Party animal; self-explanatory

14) Critic; Critical of everything.

15) Judge; lawful.

16) Bravo; a bully.

17) Curmudgeon; everything is against you, nothing ever works out.

18) Caregiver; is mindful of others.

19) Competitor; always strive to be the best.

20) Poltroon; never approach a problem head on, try to find a way round it.

Ahhh, do I smell the sweet scent of blood on a warriors axe

I'm all for rolling dice. Use a d20 for Initiative, with bonuses from characters stats?

Quote
Roll for Strength / Intellect / Agility / Willpower / Charisma / Magic.... 1d6+1 for each.
I like rolling bigger d20 numbers ... like the old D&D ... 4d6 remove the lowest?

Quote

Would be nice to be able to pick our own weapons/skills/armour of choice?

Yeah, all looks interesting!

Yeah .... Barbers shipwrecked on a strange and mystical island!? ... wait, didn't we do that already with the old D&D campaign? It was fun then and would be fun now. cool

Count me in z if ur looking for players biggrin Always happy to make suggestions but go with the flow! ... Walts (aka "Lobarg")

No, not really.

I seen the set of rules, or something like them , on the net, that Pavlov linked to.
And thought....if i was going to write a simple set of RPG rules, then what would it look like. ???

So i nicked the core of the QP set, added some D&D and RuneQuest.
Magic system from Mage, and Personality profile from Vampire the Masquerade.
Experience system from RuneQuest.
Combat's initiative system using cards....so people can take their turn, or wait and play it later in the turn.
Hit location system using a special die i have.
And a simple damage system which does not use hit points.

All bits i have seen and know they work.

Or in some cases, just think they would work best.

i would prefer not to count things whenever possible.

The stats average out at 4.5, so that two added together give an average 9 or less on 1d20 for skill rolls.

Quote (Morgoth)

I thought it would be more fun to roll the combat skills, and then build on them through Experience...sort of RuneQuest....ish

Its quicker to have a system where everything is rolled for.

And more of a challenge.

Well....it was Drow Rebels flying to the mystical island on a magic-powered Airship......so not too far off. wink

No, not really.

Anyone for running a "D&D" Style RPG anytime soon ... something without too many stats, a chance to roll a d20 or two and some models on the table?

"A Band of Viking Brothers!"

"The Barbarians of Sessair!"

Lots of Dark Ages ideas floating about the web,

I'm OK GM'ing for a couple of friends in my Strontium Dog (Traveller) campaign, but any more than two people and I get flustered!

Maybe someone else will take the hint? There's even a Slaine RPG (link here) published a while ago that they could use if they wanted to go down that street, but like I said, any RPG rules would suit as long as there is diff dice than the usual d6 ... I'm getting withdrawal shakes not rolling my pretty d20 dice!

Barbarians was just an idea straight off the top.

What about this ?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2fDrDpKYHw

Or a Star Trek style game but from a Red Blok perspective ? (AT-43 background )

Or a tribe of pre-historic cavemen ?

Or ................

What if we just play some one-off games rather than a campaign.

just to see what grabs us ?

(and shame on anyone who has not seen the post-apocalypse masterpiece Salute to the Juggers. ) tongue

Slaine RPG

Nice....actually something along the lines i was thinking of !

Slaine must have been a 2000 AD character some time after i stopped subscribing................
....at one point the only comic i still got was "Savage Sword of Conan". ( and Battle for Wargamers, but that wasn't a comic. wink )

So lets say we have a remote barbarian village.
The characters are young warriors who must pass a test... a rites of passage, if you like.
They must travel to the Southlands and each return with a gift for the Chief ( Laird ??? ).

Slaine did go through a few 2000AD artists ...

>>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sl%C3%A1ine_(comics)

... but it was a great comic story for it's time. Conan is def a classic, and made popular with Arny. Plenty of material for any GM!

A "rite of passage" ... yeah, that could even work as a one-off gameday as a one-on-one for GM/Player. A bit like the Spartan movie, 300, where the young (aged 12) Leo goes for a wander with only a spear and his wits to returns with the wolf skin. Once again, plenty of scope for anyone to pick at with a little bit of Googling ... Walts

Backgrounds are all well and good.

The thing is, i'm trying to think more along the lines of what kind of things will the characters do ?

Fantasy RPGs = find the monster / kill it / take its stuff. ( or at least 90% of the time tongue )

Sci-fi RPGs = find the bad guy ( normally a great deal of finding is entailed ) / kill him / take his stuff.

Or at least that's the way we play them. wink

There must be other kinds of game ?

Other ways to go about roleplaying characters ?

Vampire the Masquerade is different as its about character survival inside a supernatural community.

Call of Cthulhu is different, because it is horror, and a "tragic end" is normally expected. ( unlike other RPGs )

So the question is ........ if i we start another RPG .....what would the characters do ???

DEMON : " When next we meet, i shall tear you limb from limb...there will be no escape. "

Hero: " You bring balloon animals and i'll hire a clown..... we can make it a regular party. "

Maybe the characters could be finding their place in the group as they travel. Who is the alpha male? Who is the mediator? A bit like a pack of wolves. A bit brutal but you've been there before! Anyway you guys know more about it than I do. Make the experience more about group dynamics than just killing things and getting rich. But then killing things could get you more prestige within the group. Now it's getting complicated. wacko wacko wink

A survival type game might be most effective for that ?

Strangers forced to co-operate in a hostile environment.

I don't mind a bit of complication sometimes, plots don't always have to be simple.

Should the game not be about the characters, the story, and how they perceive the world and each other ?

Yeah! But, as you have pointed out to me in the past, we play the games like a wargame and tend to ignore character interaction. Some (me?) find it hard to be some one else and act differently.

This pretty much sums things up.

I guess i would like to try something a bit more indepth......immersive.

But, then again....i dont know if i would be comfortable going in for a total "am-dram" style of game either.

The Celtic Heroes game you ran, did have scope for our PC's to have a bit of character. happy

And was the best game i played in since Zellak my D&D character. ( about 20 years ago ! )

Space explorers ?

A brand new ship, with a crew of people who are strangers ?

Thrown together to explore space, perhaps their planet has been cut off from the rest of space for some time....

...Like the Traveller 2300 star-vikings storyline ?

Never heard of that surprised I was thinking of sea farers, barbarians as per the thread. I s'pose it could work in space but it's a bit sub Star Trek innit?
