Quote p1fx ( ) Che, So did you discover the hobby in a similar way to Z then? or had you had an interest in it long before the poster appeared in the library all those years ago? I played at school a long, long time ago (1968/69), with friends; then stopped for a bit as we all went our separate ways. Then I started playing boardgames in the early 70s. I read an advert in "The Phoenix", a magazine for boardgamers, in 1978 from the aforementioned David Whyte who was looking for opponents. That's how I met zellak and we've been frenemies [friendly enemies] ever since :). It's been a long time!!Added (24-Apr-2014, 5:10 PM) ---------------------------------------------

What became of this David White? did he move away? sounds like he was responsible for you all getting together. What boardgames were you playing at the time?

Quote zellak ( ) Wooden Ships and Iron Men....Kingmaker......Diplomacy.......A Mighty Fortress. Ah cool, interesting to know.
Quote zellak ( ) We played D&D to. I imagine back then there was quite a few D&D groups in the area, or I would like to think there was anyway.

I think the first miniatures game we played was Ancients using WRG rules. Then we branched out into other periods and genres.

We used WRG Ancients 6th edition....they had a bolt-on set of fantasy ideas/rules on the back page.
They were the rules we used when our D&D games moved to the battlefield.
We never used WHFB or anything "fantasy".
In fact we didn't get into GW games at all until Banksi and Roddy joined us.

Ah, so Banksi and Rodders were already into GW games when they joined? When did they join? Unusual that GW games had not sneaked in before that though.

Don't remember when Banksi and Roddy joined but it must've been early 80's. The venue is wheelchair accessible.

Quote p1fx ( ) So they have been members for a pretty long time then. Yeah. Roddy was an absent friend for a while but couldn't resist and came back into the fold. He doesn't go online at all so won't be able to answer any questions. Banksi is a regular.

Quote p1fx ( ) Ah, so Banksi and Rodders were already into GW games when they joined?
I would never say Roddy was into GW, he has a pathological hatred of the evil empire, and I'm not too fond of the money grubbers myself, there methods are despicable in persuading young people to part with their money, GW is a cancer that has grown from a cell to a huge tumour Roddy was into Napoleonics, various rules but Guilders was his favorite, I started playing WRG 1/300th Modern, then drifted onto WRG 7th edition ancients. Both sets of rules were much more complicated/ intricate than the rules we play now.
